A collectable gold full sovereign of King George the Fifth, dated 1925. In April of this year, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Winston Churchill, announced Britain’s return to the gold standard. The Act that brought this into law also ended the circulation of gold specie coins. The obverse of this Sovereign features the bare-headed, left-facing, moustachioed portrait of George V, engraved by Australian sculptor, Sir Edgar Bertram MacKennal. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous Saint George and the dragon design, wherein the mounted saint delivers the killing blow to a wounded dragon. The lack of mint mark indicates that this coin was struck at The Royal Mint in London, rather than at one of the colonial branch mints. An excellent investment or addition to any collection. Spink 3996, Marsh 220.
