Collectable gold full London Sovereigns of King George the Fifth, dated 1916: one of just 1,544,120 minted at the central branch of the Royal Mint in this year. The obverse features the bare-headed, left-facing portrait of George V, engraved by Australian sculptor, Bertram MacKennal. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous Saint George design, wherein the mounted saint delivers the killing blow to a wounded dragon. The lack of mint mark indicates that this coin was struck at The Royal Mint in London, rather than at one of the colonial branch mints. George V sovereigns dated 1916 are somewhat harder to find than others in the series. As standard these coins are struck in 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold on a planchet with a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. Our Best Value historic Sovereigns, including this King George V example are graded VF (Very Fine) or better. References: S 3996, Marsh 218.
