1887 Victoria Gold Full Sovereign Sydney Mint Young Head Saint George Coin

Young Head Portrait With 'S' Mintmark
William Wyon's youthful portrait of Queen Victoria appears on the obverse of these 1887 coins, with the artist's initials shown on the truncation. This is presented together with an inscription that reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:' and a tiny 'S' mintmark positioned below the bust.
Saint George And The Dragon Reverse
The reverse of these Sydney mint coins features Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon motif, created for the first modern gold Sovereigns. The date (1887) appears below.
Sydney Mint Coin Struck In 22-Carat Gold
Like all 'full' Sovereigns, these Sydney mint coins are struck in 22-carat gold. Each weighs approximately 7.98 grams and measures 22.05 millimetres in diameter.
1887-S Young Head Sovereign Mintage
1,000,000 Young Head gold Sovereigns were struck at the Sydney mint in 1887. This figure includes both St George reverse and shield reverse coins dated 1887. In this year, the first Jubilee Head Sovereigns were struck at the Sydney mint though surviving 1887-S Jubilee Sovereigns are very scarce.
Collecting Sydney Mint Gold Sovereigns
The Young Head Sydney Sovereign series provides the serious collector with a challenging but rewarding task. Two different reverse designs issued by three different mints, as well as numerous variants, some of which are supremely scarce, make it extremely difficult to complete a full date run.
