The Royal Mint's 2003 four-coin Sovereign sets include the following gold proof coins:
All four coins in this 2003 set feature Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on their obverse. This design is encircled by an abbreviated Latin legend that reads 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF ·'.
Benedetto Pistrucci's instantly recognisable rendition of the legend of Saint George and the dragon is shown on the reverse of these coins. The date (2003) is shown below with the artist's 'B.P.' initials to the lower right.
Like all British Sovereigns, the proof coins in this set are struck in solid 22-carat gold. In total, these pieces weigh 67.89 grams and offer an actual gold weight of 62.23 grams or just over two troy ounces.
Records indicate that The Royal Mint issued 2,050 four-coin Sovereign sets in 2003, of a maximum mintage of 2,250. Three-coin Sovereign sets were also released in 2003, without the £5 and including a gold proof DNA £2.
This pre-owned Royal Mint collectors set is supplied in the original green leather case of issue, fitted to the four encapsulated coins. The numbered certificate of authenticity is also included.
