In 2003, The Royal Mint released another Britannia coin collection featuring a unique reverse, which was the third time the coin series had a one-off design. Like all previous Britannia editions before it, the renowned Royal Mint engraver Philip Nathan was responsible for the 2003 version of the collectable coin. In a contemporary twist, Britannia is seen facing to the left, with modernist text placed over her effigy. To complement this, the obverse design shows Ian Rank Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fourth official design of the Queen used on UK coinage. Four coins are present in the limited edition red leather box set: 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz. A three-coin set was also released in 2003, which excludes the 1oz piece. Each coin is struck to a high-quality proof finish, obtained using highly polished dies during production to give an attractive frosted finish. The fine gold weight for all the coins combined is 1.85 troy ounces, with a total weight of 62.77 grams. Unlike more recent Britannia coins, these proof versions are struck in 22-carat gold, alloyed with silver, giving them a brilliant yellow gold appearance. Being pound sterling gold coins, they're exempt from capital gains tax and VAT. Just 1,250 sets were issued by The Royal Mint in this limited edition presentation. How To Buy A Gold Britannia Set?

The gold Britannia range was officially released by The Royal Mint in 1987, with the silver edition following in 1997 and the first platinum version appearing in 2007. Although primarily a vehicle for gold bullion investment, the gold Britannia has also been struck to proof standard for the collector's market. Every year, the Britannia is released in proof sets, with the composition and style of the coins varying from year to year. Initially, they were struck using 22-carat (0.9167 fine) gold, but switched over to 0.9999 fine (24-carat) in 2013. From 1987 to 1989, the coins were alloyed with copper, giving them an attractive rose gold hue, and between 1990 and 2012 they were alloyed with silver, giving a brilliant yellow gold appearance. Some of these older sets have low mintages and can be purchased at competitive prices compared to more recent issues. Nowadays, the trend from the Mint is to keep the design on the bullion coins constant, with the proof editions featuring a unique reverse every year, enhancing the appeal the proof coins have to collectors.
