1996 four-coin gold proof Sovereign sets include the following Royal Mint coins:
Also included is an exclusive gold-plated 1996 Sovereign medal with a rat on the reverse.
Raphael Maklouf designed the coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II that appears on the obverse of the four coins in this set. The first portrait of Her Majesty used on UK coins, it is accompanied by an inscription that reads 'ELIZABETH II DEI · GRA · REG · F · D'.
The reverse of these 1996 gold coins displays the instantly recognisable image of England's patron saint, St George, mounted on a rearing horse, pointing his sword at a winged dragon. This historic design was created by 19th-century artist Benedetto Pistrucci for the first modern Sovereigns.
These coins are struck to a historic specification in solid 22-carat gold with The Royal Mint's premium proof finish. Together, these coins weigh 67.89 grams, equivalent to an actual gold weight of 62.23 grams, or approximately 2 troy ounces.
Records indicate that The Royal Mint issued just 742 of these four-coin Sovereign sets in 1996, significantly less than the published issue limit of 1,250. Complete sets in good condition can be difficult to find.
Originally, in 1996, four-coin Sovereign sets were issued in a red leather presentation case, fitted for four individually encapsulated coins. This pre-owned example is accompanied by the 1996 Royal Mint medal and the original, numbered certificate of authenticity.
