The Royal Mint commemorated the 75th anniversary of the death of British inventor John Logie Baird with the release of a number of special 50 Pence coins. The third release in the Mint's Innovation in Science series, this edition is the brilliant uncirculated coin struck in cupro-nickel. John Logie Baird was born in 1888 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, and he showed an inventive side right from the start. As a child, he set up a makeshift telephone exchange in his bedroom so he could communicate with his friends across the street. His studies at the University of Glasgow were cut short by the First World War; he was exempted from service because of poor health. By early 1926, he had demonstrated moving television pictures for the first ever time, and followed this up with long-distance broadcasts in 1927 and even a transatlantic broadcast in 1928. For these achievements, he was dubbed the 'father of television'. On this collectable coin's reverse, the agency Osborne Ross has placed a transmission tower in the centre with milestones in Logie Baird's life coming out of the radio waves. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Jody Clark. Specifications are a weight of 8.00 grams and a diameter of 27.30 millimetres. Your UK 50p coin is offered in the original limited edition packaging from the Royal Mint, which includes a protective capsule. Free delivery to UK addresses.
