The first release in the 2020 Tower of London BU Five Pound coin series shows the White Tower, the iconic image of the famous London castle. The Historic Royal Palaces organisation has collaborated with the Royal Mint to issue this commemorative cupronickel coin, which is issued in the original limited edition packaging. Throughout its near-1000 year history, the Tower of London has been an imposing landmark of the city of London, and the White Tower is the original fortification which gives the castle its name. Believed to have been constructed around 1078 on the orders of William the Conquerer, the White Tower was originally intended to be the strongest fortification of the castle and a symbol of Norman power in England. Today, it has been repurposed as a museum and tourist attraction which houses the Royal Armouries collection. The reverse shows the same outline of a Norman arched window present in the other coins in the series, but with the ceremonial mace of office carried by the Chief Yeoman Warder in front of it. A model of the White Tower is on top of the mace. On the obverse, the fifth definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen. It was designed by the Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark. The coin's specifications are a weight of 28.28 grams, a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and an alloy made up of cupro-nickel. This pre-owned coin comes in its original limited edition packaging as standard, with the coin encased in a protective capsule attached to an informative slipcase.
