The Tower of London's Ceremony of the Keys is featured on this 2019 brilliant uncirculated Five Pound Crown coin, which is the last release of the Royal Mint's four-part series celebrating London's famous castle. At precisely seven minutes to ten o'clock every night, the Chief Yeoman Warder of the Tower of London performs the Ceremony of the Keys. This ceremonial and rigorous locking and unlocking of the Tower gates began under the reign of Edward III, who was outraged that he could turn up and walk into the Tower unchallenged. The ceremony was put in writing under Mary I, as she grew nervous about unrest, and fixed by the Duke of Wellington in 1826. Some say that the only time this prestigious ceremony has been disrupted since that year was in 1940 when a Luftwaffe bomb fell on the Tower. The design, by Glyn Davies depicts a set of large, old fashioned keys and a lantern resting on a table. Imposed around this scene is part of the architectural plan of the Tower of London. When this pre-owned £5 is viewed together with the other three coins in the series, the architectural plans come together to show a complete map of the Tower. An inscription reading 'TOWER OF LONDON' is written above the design, while another inscription around the edge of the coin reads 'ON INTO TWILIGHT WITHIN WALLS OF STONE' which is taken from a poem by Samuel Rogers. On the obverse is Jody Clark's official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was used on UK coinage from 2015 to 2023. Specifications are a weight of 28.28 grams and a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, struck twice to give a BU finish. Your coin is housed in a Royal Mint presentation folder, which is the original limited edition packaging.
