The Royal Air Force was formed in April 1918. To mark their centenary year, The Royal Mint released an exclusive selection of collectable Two Pound coins, with this brilliant uncirculated edition depicting the official badge of Britain's Air Force. The RAF was the first independent air force ever established, being founded in the last months of the First World War. It adopted the motto of 'PER ARDUA AD ASTRA', which is seen on this UK coin's edge and roughly translates as 'through adversity to the stars'. Five different coins make up this 2018 series of coins, which mark the different eras of aircraft that have served in this pioneering branch of the British armed forces. On the reverse (tails) side, Rhys Morgan's adaptation of the crowned eagle badge of the RAF appears, which has been unchanged for 100 years. This simple yet striking design is paired with Jody Clark's effigy of Elizabeth II on the obverse (heads) side, which is the fifth and last UK coin portrait of the late monarch. This coin is made of the same metal alloy as those found in your change and is the same size and weight. However, these RAF coins are struck twice during production to give a superior 'brilliant uncirculated' finish which is protected by the original Royal Mint presentation packaging. This includes a built in coin capsule and lots of information about the Royal Air Force. A great gift idea for aircraft and military enthusiasts.
