BU 2012 Olympics Handover to Rio Two Pound coin in the original limited edition packaging. After the end of the London 2012 Olympics, the Olympic Torch was passed on the Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro, the next host of the games. The Royal Mint commemorated the symbolic event with the issue of a special set of collectable £2 coins, with this edition being the brilliant uncirculated base metal piece. In 2009, Rio de Janeiro defeated Madrid, Chicago and Tokyo in the ballot process for the 2016 games (officially the Games of the XXXI Olympiad) and became the first South American city to host the Olympics. During the closing ceremony of the 2012 games, the then Mayor of London Boris Johnson passed over the Olympic flag to the head of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, who in turn officially handed over the flag to the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes. The Brazilian contingent then performed an eight-minute segment titled 'Embrace', showcasing their country to the world. On the coin's reverse Jonathan Olliffe depicts two hands adjacent to the flag of Brazil and the flag of the United Kingdom, with the Olympic baton being handed over to the Brazilian hand. The obverse has the fourth official UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin itself weighs 12.00 grams and measures 28.40 millimetres in diameter, and is housed in a protective coin sleeve from the Royal Mint. Free UK delivery with The Britannia Coin Company.
