2005 marked the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, which was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and his ministers. To commemorate this, the Royal Mint released a special edition brilliant uncirculated Two Pound coin. The plot involved a conspiracy to blow up the House of Lords using barrels of gunpowder during the State Opening of Parliament on November 5th, 1605, with the detonation of the explosives being the responsibility of Guy Fawkes. The event that remains in the consciousness of the United Kingdom today, as we mark each 5th of November with, bonfires, firework displays and the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes. Although he is commonly thought of as being behind the planned assassination, Guy Fawkes was not the mastermind behind the operation. He and his other conspirators were acting under the leadership of Robert Catesby, and all of them would lose their lives either by execution or during the last stand at Holbeach House in Staffordshire. On the coin, the edge bears an inscription reading 'REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER'. Designed by Peter Forster, the reverse design is a circular arrangement of symbols of state - the mace, the crosier and the sword - representing the survival of the British Crown. The circular design is also reminiscent of the popular Catherine wheel fireworks used on Bonfire Night. It is paired on the obverse with the definitive fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Specifications of this pre-owned coin are a bimetallic alloy of cupronickel in the centre and a nickel-brass outer ring, a total diameter of 28.40 millimetres and a total weight of 12.00 grams. It comes issued in the original limited edition packaging from The Royal Mint.
