Limited edition Royal Mint BUnc Marconi £2 in original presentation folder. In 1901, radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi made the first successful transatlantic wireless transmission. Such a feat had long been deemed impossible due to the curvature of the earth, but in December 1901, signals sent from Cornwall were received in Newfoundland in a huge technological advancement. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event, The Royal Mint released this brilliant uncirculated, bimetallic Two Pound coin. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley's regal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. On the reverse, a design by Robert Evans shows a representation of radio waves spreading across the surface of the coin. The morse code for 'S' has been incorporated into the design - this was the original signal that was sent from Cornwall to Newfoundland in 1901. The edge inscription honours his achievement, reading '··· WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC ··· MARCONI 1901'. This edition comes sealed in its original packaging from The Royal Mint which includes lots of information about Marconi's achievements. The folder preserves the fine, brilliant uncirculated finish of the coin: more detailed than regular circulating coinage. A great addition to your Two Pound collection.
