The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
Few works of literature have shaped popular culture quite like JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Published between 1954 and 1955, Tolkien's epic created an entire mythology - complete with its own languages, histories and maps - that has captivated readers for generations.
When Peter Jackson brought Middle-earth to cinemas in 2001, those stories reached a new global audience of hundreds of millions. Decorated with seventeen Academy Awards across three films, the trilogy remains one of the most celebrated achievements in cinema history.
A Seven-Coin Anniversary Series
To mark twenty-five years since The Fellowship of the Ring first arrived on screen, The Royal Mint has authorised a seven-coin UK Fifty Pence collection honouring the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
The series unfolds across three years, with each film receiving its own pair of commemorative coins to mark its anniversary: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2026, The Two Towers in 2027, and The Return of the King in 2028. The collection opens with a coin dedicated to the object at the very heart of the story, the One Ring itself.
First Official UK Lord Of The Rings Coins
While other nations have issued Lord of the Rings coins, this is the first official UK collection.
Produced by The Royal Mint in partnership with Warner Bros and New Line Productions, the designs are drawn directly from the imagery of Peter Jackson's films. Each coin carries the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III on the obverse, sculpted by Martin Jennings, and is presented in bespoke packaging exploring the film series.
The range follows The Royal Mint's 2023 Two Pound collection honouring JRR Tolkien, released fifty years after his passing, and joins popular licensed film and literature series dedicated to Harry Potter, Beatrix Potter, Winnie the Pooh, The Gruffalo and Paddington Bear.
