In 2022, the Royal Mint issued a commemorative silver proof Fifty Pence coin to mark 100 years since the birth of the wartime codebreaker, Alan Turing. It's part of the Mint's Innovation in Science 50p coin series. During the Second World War, Turing worked at the top-secret Bletchley Park facility which ended up cracking the supposedly 'unbreakable' enigma code used by the Nazis. The Cambridge mathematician's leadership on this covert front has been widely credited to bringing the war to an end 2-4 years earlier than otherwise would have been, and saving millions of lives. Codebreaking was what Turing was known for, and this theme is displayed on this UK 50 Pence. Matthew Dent and Christian Davies jointly designed the coin's reverse side; they have displayed the rotating drum used on the bombes in Bletchley Park with encrypted code in the background. The text reads 'ALAN TURING' on the outside ring of the cog. On the other side, the obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Jody Clark. It's the fifth effigy of Her Majesty on UK coinage. It weighs eight grams, measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter and contains 0.2379 troy ounces of pure silver. To appeal to collectors, the coin is struck numerous times with highly polished dies to give a frosted proof finish, and there's an issue limit of only 3,000 coins. You'll receive you Alan Turing 50p coin in its original packaging from the Royal Mint which comprises of a premium presentation case in which the coin is encased in a protective capsule. The numbered certificate of authenticity is included, along with an interesting information booklet. A fitting tribute to one of Britain's unsung heroes.
