2021 Sir Walter Scott Two Pound Piedfort Silver Proof Coin

UK21SWPF 2021 Sir Walter Scott £2 Piedfort Silver Proof Boxed
Sir Walter Scott was born in Scotland, and spent some of his childhood in the Scottish Borders. His love of the North and its unique traditions of storytelling are evident in his literary work. One of the best selling authors of the nineteenth century, Scott is best known for his novels including Ivanhoe, and Waverley. His stories blended historical events with his rich imagination, earning him the nickname ‘the Wizard of the North.’ To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Scott’s birth, The Royal Mint released a series of Two Pound coins, including this silver proof piedfort version. Just 771 of these coins were issued, and they feature a design by Stephen Raw of a small side portrait of the writer on the bottom left, with his name ‘Sir Walter Scott’ written in an old fashioned typeface. Below, are the words ‘NOVELIST, HISTORIAN, POET’ in acknowledgement of his achievements. The outer ring carries the legend ‘250th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH 2021.’ Around the edge of the coin is an inscription reading ‘THE WILL TO DO, THE SOUL TO DARE’ which is a quote taken from Scott’s 1810 poem, ‘The Lady of the Lake.’ On the obverse is Jody Clark’s fifth official effigy of The Queen, which has been used on UK coinage since 2015. This piedfort coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, with its numbered certificate of authenticity. It weighs 24.00 grams and has a diameter of 28.40 milimetres. Struck in .925 sterling silver, it has a ring of fine gold plating to appear visually similar to the bi-metallic coins in circulation.
