While fossils and dinosaur bones must have been uncovered across the world for thousands of years, it was in 1824 with the work of William Buckland that the first scientific description of a dinosaur was formed, using fragments of jaw and bone found in Oxfordshire. Buckland had found remains of a 'megalosaurus' which was from the same genus of dinosaur as the better known Tyrannosaurus rex. The term 'dinosauria' was coined by anatomist Richard Owen in the mid nineteenth century. He used it to mean 'fearfully great' in recognition of the terrifying size and power that these pre-historic animals. Throughout the nineteenth century discoveries were made and theories exchanged. In 2020, The Royal Mint released a set of three new Fifty Pence designs to chart the history of dinosaur discoveries and advances in palaeontology, one of which is this silver proof Megalosaurus design. Palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls chose to depict the magnificent dinosaur with feathers, although scientists are unsure whether these creatures would have been feathered or not. It has scars around its mouth to indicate fights with other megalosaur and prey animals. In front of this dinosaur design, is a representation of the piece of jaw bone which Buckland found in the 1820s which inspired his descriptions. The coin carries a legend reading 'MEGALOSAURUS' and 'BUCKLAND 1824.' One of 7,000 in this format, the 50p comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, including a informative leaflet about the megalosaurus. It is of the standard 8.00 grams and 27.30 milimetres diameter. Struck in .925 sterling silver, this beautiful coin is finished in proof standard giving a greater definition to the design. On the obverse is Jody Clark's popular portrait of Her Majesty the Queen.
