One ounce 999 fine silver 2019 Year of the Pig bullion coin: the sixth release in The Royal Mint’s Shēngxiào or Lunar collection. This twelve year series charts the cycle of the Chinese zodiac with coins inspired by the animal signs and their attributes. The series began in 2014 with a collection of coins celebrating the Year of the Horse and has often featured designs that combine Chinese artistic motifs with British ones. These Year of the Pig coins are no different. The reverse design, created by Harry Brockway shows a sow suckling five piglets. Family is important to those born under the sign of the pig and five is said to be a lucky number in Chinese culture. It’s a nighttime scene, the stars above referencing the zodiac, shining on an English country cottage, surrounded by hydrangeas - another symbol of good fortune. The date and composition appear above. Unlike the proof edition, this 1oz bullion version shows a textured sunburst design to the background with a similar pattern to the obverse. This shows Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, alongside the face value of this piece: £2 / Two Pounds. These bullion coins are composed of one troy ounce of 99.9% silver, finished to The Royal Mint’s bullion standard. The total weight is 31.21 grams and the diameter is 38.61 millimetres. Just 138,888 of these Lunar coins have been issued and these uncirculated examples are offered in a protective sleeve, packaged securely for delivery which is free in the UK.
