2019 Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Crown Silver Proof
This attractive Silver Proof Five Pound coin, bearing the image of on of the Tower of London's ravens, is the first design released in The Royal Mint's 2019 Tower of London collection.
The 2019 Tower of London Collection
The Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof is the first of four coins, released as part of an exciting 2019 collaboration between The Royal Mint and Historic Royal Palaces. The collection is the first time that the Tower of London has been celebrated on official UK coinage.
Designs issued in 2019 included: The Ceremony of the Keys, The Crown Jewels, The Yeoman Warders and The Legend of the Ravens. Coins in this collectible series have been issued in Silver Proof - like this example - as well as Brilliant Uncirculated and Gold Proof editions.
Glyn Davies' Historic Designs
The reverse of the 2019 Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof is the work of Glyn Davies: a designer whose work has featured on a number of The Royal Mint coins. Previous works include the 2017 Sapphire Jubilee £5 and the 2015 Remembrance Day Aldernay £5.
Like all of Davies' designs for the 2019 Tower of London collection, the reverse of The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof coin features part of an architectural plan of the Tower. When viewed together, the four coins in the series show a full map of the historic fortress.
The Legend of the Tower's Ravens
The star of Davies' reverse for the 2019 Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof is one of the Tower's iconic ravens. These birds have been living at the Tower of London for centuries.
Legend has it that if the ravens ever leave the White Tower will fall and disaster will befall the kingdom. To ensure this doesn't happen, one of the Tower's guards - Yeoman Warders, better known as Beefeaters - serves as the Ravenmaster and is responsible for feeding the birds' breakfast every day at dawn.
On Into Twilight Within Walls of Stone
The edge of the 2019 Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof bears an intriguing inscription:
'ON INTO TWILIGHT WITHIN WALLS OF STONE'
This is a line from ‘Human Life' by English poet Samuel Rogers, first published in 1819. The anonymous subject of Roger's poem is cast as a traitor and imprisoned in the Tower of London like many before him. The inscription is a chilling reminder of the Tower's historic role as a prison.
A Silver Proof Five Pound Coin
The obverse of the 2019 Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof shows Jody Clark's definitive portrait of Elizabeth II, in use on UK coinage since 2015. This commemorative coin is legal tender and Capital Gains Tax free with a face value of Five Pounds.
Struck from 28.28 grams of .925 Sterling Silver, this 2019 Tower of London The Legend of the Ravens £5 Silver Proof coin is finished to Proof standard. That means that you can enjoy Glyn Davies Legend of the Ravens design as it was meant to be viewed.
