In 2018 the RAF turned 100 years old. To mark this centenary, The Royal Mint released a series of coins celebrating the Air Force’s varied and important history. Alongside coins featuring the Spitfire, Sea King, and Lightning, was this Vulcan design. The Vulcan first flew in 1952 and became the epitome of power. It was part of the UK’s nuclear deterrent from 1956 until the Polaris submarine system took over. The Vulcan’s final operations were during the Falklands War where it took a 6,800 mile round trip to compromise the runway of Port Stanley. Pilots remember the aircraft fondly, from its high power and manoeuvrability to the speed in which it could be readied in an emergency. The reverse of this celebratory coin - designed by brothers, Neil and Robert Talbot - shows a Vulcan bomber in flight with the centenary dates and ‘VULCAN RAF’ inscribed around the coin’s edge. This unique design is paired with Jody Clark’s effigy of Elizabeth II on the obverse. A great gift for aircraft enthusiasts, this Two Pound coin is from a limited edition presentation of 4,795 and is struck to proof standard in 12.00 grams of .925 Sterling Silver. Available now with original box and leaflet from The Royal Mint with numbered certificate of authenticity.
