2018 Representation of the People Act 50p Piedfort Silver Proof

UK18RPPF 2018 Representation of the People Act 50p Piedfort Silver Proof Reverse
£60.00
Prior to 1918, a small proportion of men and no women were allowed to vote in the UK. Those who were entitled made up just 26% of the British adult population. Following the extensive campaigning of suffrage groups, along with the impact of the First World War, things began to change. Working class men had fought in the same battles as those from the upper class and landholders, while on the Home Front women had taken on traditionally male roles to support the war effort. The Representation of the People Act came in several stages but ultimately decided that servicemen over the age of 19, all men over 21, and women over the age of 30 who met property requirements, were finally given the right to vote. It was not until 1928 that there was complete gender equality in suffrage, but this 1918 Act was a significant step forward. To celebrate the Representation of the People Act’s 100th Anniversary, The Royal Mint released a series of 50ps, including this silver proof edition. On the reverse is a design by Stephen Taylor depicting a very British queue of people waiting to vote. They are carefully depicted to represent a woman, a soldier, a working class man, and a suffragette. All those who were finally able to have their voices heard. On the ‘heads’ side of the coin is Jody Clark’s fifth official effigy of The Queen. 987 Fifty Pence pieces were issued in this presentation, and your coin will come with its original packaging and numbered certificate of authenticity. It has the standard weight and diameter of 16.00 grams and 27.30 milimetres. Struck in .925 sterling silver, this coin is finished to proof standard, giving it a high quality finish and detailed design.
