In 1917 a new Royal dynasty was born. Following three years of war with Germany, King George V and his advisors made the decision to change the royal family’s name from the German Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the very British Windsor. Over the first hundred years of Windsor reign, the family has endured several familial, political, national, and international challenges, from the Second World War, to the Easter Rising, and from the Great Depression to Edward VIII’s abdication. The third Windsor monarch, George VI was an unexpected King, but became a popular one. His daughter, Elizabeth, has become the longest reigning Windsor monarch, recently celebrating her Platinum Jubilee. With Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George making up three generations of future Windsor monarchs, the dynasty will likely another century or more. To celebrate this first century, The Royal Mint released a commemorative coin. Designed by Timothy Noad, it features the Royal Badge of Windsor surrounded by an inscription reading ‘CENTENARY OF THE HOUSE OF WINDSOR · 2017.’ The badge itself depicts the Round Tower of Windsor Castle, flying the Royal Standard. It is surrounded by two oak branches and crowned with the Imperial Crown. Around the edge of the coin is another inscription reading ‘THE CHRISTENING OF A DYNASTY.’ Noads’ design is paired, on the obverse, with Jody Clark’s fifth official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. A total of 5,500 were issued by The Royal Mint in this silver proof piedfort edition. This £5 Crown is struck in .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61 milimetres. With a weight of 56.56 grams and finished in proof standard, this collectible piece comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, with certificate of authenticity.
