For the first time since 1983, on 28th March 2017, the first change to the One Pound coin was introduced by The Royal Mint. In efforts to combat counterfeiting and add security measures, in 2016 The Royal Mint issued the last round pounds. They were replaced the following year with new twelve sided, bimetallic coins inspired by the old threepenny bit. There were an estimated 1,553 million of the original round coins in circulation in March 2014. Of these, The Royal Mint estimated that around 3% were counterfeit. The new 12 sided coin had a hidden security feature which would make it harder to counterfeit. This 2017 Silver Proof new pound features the first reverse design to be used on this new format. It was created by a 15 year old school boy, David Pearce, who won a competition with his 'Nations of the Crown' design. It features a floral design, with a different plant representing each of the Home Nations. From left to right these are the rose of England, the leek of Wales, the thistle of Scotland, and the shamrock of Northern Ireland. They are encircled at their base by a crown and the denomination 'ONE POUND' is inscribed below. This attractive design is paired on the obverse with Jody Clark's effigy of The Queen which has been used on circulating UK coinage since 2015. 26,600 of these new pounds were issued in Silver Proof in 2017, and this one comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with certificate of authenticity. It is struck in .925 sterling silver with a hand of fine gold plating, and finished to proof quality, leaving a higher definition and more attractive finish. It weighs 10.47 grams and has a diameter of 23.03 millimetres.
