The New Pound coin design launched by The Royal Mint in 2017 featured a design by the fifteen year old David Pearce who won a competition with his 'Nations of the Crown' design. It features a floral design, with a different plant representing each of the Home Nations. From left to right these are the rose of England, the leek of Wales, the thistle of Scotland, and the shamrock of Northern Ireland. They are encircled at their base by a crown and the denomination 'ONE POUND' is inscribed below. Pearce's design marks the first change to the material, dimensions, and shape of the One Pound coin since 1983. In 2016, to combat counterfeiting and add security measures, The Royal Mint issued the last round pounds. They were replaced the following year with this new twelve sided, bimetallic coin inspired by the old threepenny bit. There were an estimated 1,553 million of the original round coins in circulation in March 2014. Of these, The Royal Mint estimated that around 3% were counterfeit. The new 12 sided coin had a hidden security feature which would make it harder to counterfeit. This 2017 piedfort Silver Proof new pound features, on the obverse, Jody Clark's effigy of The Queen which has been used on circulating UK coinage since 2015. Just 4,500 of these new pounds were issued in double thickness Silver Proof in 2017, and this one comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with certificate of authenticity. It is struck in .925 sterling silver with a hand of fine gold plating, and finished to proof quality, leaving a higher definition and more attractive finish. It weighs 20.94 grams and has a diameter of 23.03 milimetres.
