Sixpences were last issued for general circulation in 1967 and last seen in the 1970 Proof Set, before they were demonetised in 1980. These British coins have a long history that dates back to the reign of King Edward VI.
This modern Sixpence from The Royal Mint features a historically inspired design by John Bergdahl, showing a crowned royal cypher encircled by a wreath of national flowers, with 'SIXPENCE' above.
This design is accompanied by the official fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by designer Jody Clark and encircled by an inscription that reads 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF ·'.
Just like old British Sixpences, this coin is struck in .925 sterling silver. The difference is in the high-shine, brilliant uncirculated finish, achieved with multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies and offering exceptional fine detail.
Published records indicate that just 4,825 of these silver Sixpences were released by The Royal Mint in 2016. This pre-owned example is supplied in the original gift box, complete with an informative booklet.
