This silver proof piedfort Five Pound coin celebrates Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday; a landmark event as she became the first British monarch to reach their ninth decade. On 12 June 2016, 10,000 guests gathered for a street party on The Mall in London to celebrate the occasion. The guests were chosen to recognise The Queen’s patronage of over 600 charities and organisations, in the UK and wider Commonwealth. As well as parties and events across the country, The Royal Mint released a collection of commemorative coins and sets to honour the occasion, including this piedfort silver proof £5. The coin’s obverse features Jody Clark’s portrait of The Queen which was released the previous year. Its reverse features a design from acclaimed painter, sculptor and illustrator, Christopher Hobbs and was approved by Her Majesty. It features a central EIIR surrounded by a wreath of roses which, according to the artist, was “inspired by the heraldic rose of England and The Queen’s love of flowers.” Feminine and strong, the nine roses, all slightly different, represent her nine decades of life. Around the wider edge is inscribed “Full of Honour and Years.” Struck .925 sterling silver and weighing 56.56 grams, this £5 coin is offered in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity. This Crown is one of only 3,555 issued in this limited edition.
