When war broke out in Europe in 1914, Britain had a relatively small army, comprised of volunteers. Following Lord Kitchener’s famous recruitment drive, numbers grew significantly and by late August up to 30,000 volunteers were signing up daily. By late 1918, the Army was over 4 million strong, with early volunteers as well as later conscripts. In an idea conceived by General Sir Henry Rawlinson and Lord Derby to encourage people to sign up, ‘Pals Battalions’ were formed. This allowed men from the same neighbourhood, company, or even football club to join and serve alongside each other. To mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme where the Pale Battalions suffered horrendous casualties, The Royal Mint commissioned a series of coins, including this silver proof Two Pound. It features a design created by a creative consultancy in Liverpool - Uniform - which was led by Tim Sharp. The image was inspired by the Futurist art movement and the work of C. R. W. Nevinson whose emotive style showed war’s harsh realities. The profile of three pals occupy the centre of the coin, with a barbed wire detailing below. The legend reads ‘THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-1918’ with the date 2016 at the bottom. Around the edge is inscribed ‘FOR KING AND COUNTRY’. The reverse design is paired on the other side of the coin with Jody Clark’s 2015 effigy of The Queen, the fifth official portrait to be used. Struck in 12.00 grams of .925 sterling silver with fine gold plating around the outer ring, this coin is one of 1,703 in this presentation. It comes with the original presentation box from The Royal Mint, and the numbered certificate of authenticity.
