This silver proof 5oz coin celebrates Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday; a landmark event as she became the first British monarch to reach their ninetieth decade. On 12 June 2016, 10,000 guests gathered for a street party on The Mall in London to celebrate the occasion. The guests were chosen to recognise The Queen’s patronage of over 600 charities and organisations, in the UK and wider Commonwealth. As well as parties and events across the country, The Royal Mint released a collection of commemorative coins and sets to honour the occasion, including this limited edition five ounce piece. The coin’s obverse features Jody Clark’s portrait of The Queen which was introduced the previous year. Its reverse shows a design from acclaimed painter, sculptor and illustrator, Christopher Hobbs and was approved by Her Majesty. It features a central EIIR surrounded by a wreath of roses which, according to the artist, was ‘inspired by the heraldic rose of England and The Queen’s love of flowers’. Feminine and strong, the nine roses, all slightly different, represent her nine decades of life. This large collectors coin has a diameter of 65.00 millimetres. It’s struck in 156.30 grams of .999 silver with a proof finish which allows the owner to appreciate the fine detail of this commemorative design. This 2016 coin is from a limited edition presentation of only 1,250 pieces and comes in its original presentation packaging which comprises a card sleeve and a black leather case. The original certificate of authenticity and an information booklet are enclosed.
