On the 21st of April 1983, a new One Pound coin was introduced in the United Kingdom, gradually replacing the Bank of England £1 note which was officially removed from circulation in 1988. The first of these new pound coins featured a design by artist Eric Sewell. It depicted the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom on the reverse, and Arnold Machin's second official portrait of The Queen on the obverse. Thirty two years later, the Royal Arms design was featured again, this time designed by Timothy Noad. It would be one of the final designs to grace the old round pounds before the new twelve sided, bi-metallic coin was introduced in 2017. Around the edge of this silver proof £1 coin is inscribed 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' or 'an ornament and a safeguard,' while on the obverse Arnold Machin's portrait of the Queen is replaced with Jody Clark's effigy which was also first introduced in 2015. The Royal coat of arms of the UK are used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. The arms itself depicts a quartered shield featuring, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland. It is crowned with standing lion wearing the St Edward's Crown. To the left of the shield is another crowned lion, while to the right is the unicorn of Scotland. The motto banner reads 'DIEU ET MON DROIT', or 'God and my right.' This detailed design is carefully included on the 'tails' side of this 2015 coin, which is one of 3,500 issued. It comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, with its certificate of authenticity. This coin is struck to proof standard in .925 sterling silver. It weighs the standard 9.50 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 millimetres.
