Released by The Royal Mint in 2015, this silver proof Five Pound coin celebrates Queen Elizabeth II becoming the United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch. To achieve this status, she overtook her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Queen Elizabeth II was proclaimed queen in February 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI. Her coronation on 2 June 1953 was the first such ceremony to be televised, and the following decades of her reign have been similarly characterised by technological advances. The Queen’s portrait on the Crown’s obverse is a rare commemorative design by James Butler. Butler made his name as a sculpture but he has worked with the Royal Family before, designing the Great Seal of the Realm in 2001. He had many ideas for the coin’s reverse, and experimented with ribbons and streamers to create a sense of celebration. Ultimately, his design depicts the “simple and strong” crown, framed by two important dates: 1952 and 2015. These are the year Princess Elizabeth was proclaimed queen, and the year she became Britain’s longest serving monarch. The crown used for Butler’s design is the Coronation crown, worn by The Queen in 1953. In a fitting tribute to her long and prosperous time as Queen, the coin’s edge carries the transcription “LONG TO REIGN OVER US.” In .925 sterling silver with a weight of 28.28 grams, this £5 comes in its original rich purple and white box with a numbered certificate of authenticity. It is of a limited edition with only 10,249 issued.
