Five ounce 2015 silver proof coin from The Royal Mint, marking 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. This coin is part of a collection which marked the centenary with £5, £10, £100 and £1,000 coins, plus sets issued annually between 2014 and 2018. The obverse shows Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, the fifth definitive effigy used on British coinage, introduced in this year. The reverse bears an evocative design by James Butler MBE RA, a sculptor more famous for his larger works. His design for this 2015 coin eschews any depiction of heroism in favour of a scene of utter devastation, wrought by conflict. A duckboard path leads through a copse of dead trees like crosses. Unseen at first, obscured by the muddy ground are two indistinct figures, casualties with no grave. The dates ‘1914-1918’ appear above. The design was informed by Butlers research into the First World War including from historic photographs. It’s struck on 156.30 grams of .999 fine silver to make this £10 / Ten Pound coin which measures 65.00 millimetres in diameter. The maximum mintage assigned to this issued by The Royal Mint is just 500 pieces though the number actually minted in 2015 seems to have been quite a bit less than that. This example comes in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a certificate of authenticity and an information booklet enclosed. A moving work by a great British sculptor.
