In the famous words of Winston Churchill ‘never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.’ This ‘Few’ referred to the pilots who fought and won the Battle of Britain, successfully rebutting Hitler’s Operation Sealion to weaken and invade the British Isles. The Battle took place in 1940, with British pilots serving alongside those from Poland, France, Belgium, and Czechia. It was a devastating battle: of around 3,000 aircrew who were involved, over 500 were killed. To commemorate the sacrifices and achievements of these brave pilots and ground crew, The Royal Mint has released a special 75th anniversary silver proof 50p. It features a striking design of three airmen running towards their planes on the tarmac. Above, enemy aircraft approach, filling the sky. Designer Gary Breeze finished the design with an inscription ‘THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN’ and the date 1940. On the opposite side of the coin, is Jody Clark’s 2015 portrait of The Queen which is the fifth official effigy on modern coinage. Released in 2015, there are two versions of this Battle of Britain Fifty Pence, one featuring the new Jody Clark portrait while the other features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth official effigy. This silver proof 50 pence piece is one of 2,939 in this presentation. It weighs the standard 8.00 grams with a diameter of 27.30 millimetres, and is struck to a proof quality, meaning it has a cleaner design and better finish than the coins in your change. You will receive this popular collectors coin in its original packaging, with certificate of authenticity.
