The Royal Mint's 2015 First World War Centenary set included this £5 struck in commemoration of Victoria Cross recipient Albert Ball. The pilot received the Victoria Cross posthumously for taking down over 40 enemy aircraft during a period in 1917. His contribution to the war effort is marked on a reverse design by David Cornell. It shows Captain Ball's profile, struck on the obverse of the Elizabeth II effigy. The set, which includes the silver proof Albert Ball Five Pound, was launched under a limit of 1,915, and this individual edition is pre-owned and protectively packaged.

2015 WWI Centenary Obverse Design

This 2015-dated World War One Centenary coin features Jody Clark's definitive circulating portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse. It is, therefore, an early example of Her Late Majesty's fifth coinage portrait to feature on UK legal tender. Legend: 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D FIVE POUNDS · 2015'.

Reverse: Albert Ball VC £5 Coin

Albert Ball received the Victoria Cross posthumously for his conspicuously brave and effective efforts as an airman. Throughout his service, he downed over 40 planes and engaged the enemy in multiple outnumbered conflicts. The reverse depicts Ball alongside the aircraft he piloted to famous effectiveness, notably the Nieuport 17.

Royal Mint Silver Proof Centenary Coin

This is a proof-standard Royal Mint Five Pound coin, struck in a centenary year of WWI. It is composed of 28.28 grams of sterling silver alloy, resulting in a pure silver content of 26.15 grams.
