In 2014, a new series of One Pound coins were released by The Royal Mint with the theme of 'British Flora.' Each were designed by Timothy Noad and featured two elements of British flora to represent the four Home Nations. The last in this series represented Scotland with a bluebell and thistle design. It depicts a single thistle and bluebell arching across the reverse of the coin in a delicate, minimalist design. The denomination, ONE POUND, is inscribed below. This floral artwork is paired, on the obverse, with Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of The Queen, which is the fourth official portrait used on circulating UK coinage. This silver proof One Pound also features an edge inscription reading 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT' which translates to 'no one provokes me with impunity.' It is one of 1,540 and is struck in .925 sterling silver with a weight of 9.50 grams. The diameter is 22.50 milimetres and it is finished in proof quality. Your coin comes with its certificate of authenticity in the original packaging from The Royal Mint. The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III in the thirteenth century. According to legends, the thistle became important to Scotland when an invading Norseman stepped on a thistle and cried out, alerting Scots to the invasion. It was used on Scottish coins under James III and appeared regularly on UK currency, until 2008 when the crowned thistle 5 Pence ceased to be minted. Although the bluebell is not the official flower of Scotland, it was voted Scotland's favourite flower in 2014 and is often seen as an unofficial symbol.
