Northern Ireland is commonly associated with the flax plant. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the textile industry boomed in Ulster, especially linen which is made from flax. The Ulster linen industry employed over 70,000 people and helped cities like Belfast more than double in population between 1841 and 1871. The shamrock is even more famously linked to Ireland and Northern Ireland. Irish legends recount how Saint Patrick used the shamrock to convert the inhabitants to Christianity, using the three leaves to represent faith, love, and hope, or alternatively the Holy Trinity. In 2014, a new series of One Pound coins were released by The Royal Mint with the theme of 'British Flora.' Each were designed by Timothy Noad and featured two elements of British flora to represent each of the four Home Nations. For Northern Ireland, the flax and shamrock were chosen and feature on this silver proof version of the coin in a minimalist design. The shamrock curves around the top of the coin while the flax plant mirrors it on the bottom. Below both is the denomination 'ONE POUND' while the edge inscription reads 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN.' This floral artwork is paired, on the obverse, with Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of The Queen, which is the fourth official portrait used on circulating UK coinage. It is one of 1,540 and is struck in .925 sterling silver with a weight of 9.50 grams. The diameter is 22.50 milimetres and it is finished in proof quality. This collectible coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a certificate of authenticity.
