Britain entered the First World War on 4 August 1914. For the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of war, The Royal Mint released a commemorative series of coins, including this Two Pound in silver proof. The inscription around the edge of this coin reads ‘THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT ALL OVER EUROPE’, a quote from Foreign Secretary Edward Grey on the outbreak of war noting the dark times that were to come. The Great War as it became known at the time, was the first ‘total’ war, with 400 miles of trenches, it became the age of stalemate and incomprehensible numbers of casualties. Field Marshall Horatio Herbert Kitchener was appointed Secretary of State for War and was successful in building one of the largest ever volunteer armies. The enlistment poster of Field Marshall Kitchener appealing to British men that ‘Your country needs you,’ is an iconic image of the First World War. It is this portrait that artist John Bergdahl used as inspiration for his design on the coin’s reverse. Bergdahl stated that he wanted to capture the spirit that gripped the nation at the time, one of enthusiasm and patriotism, while not glorifying war and the suffering it brought to families across the world. Around the edge of Bergdahl’s Kitchener design is the legend ‘THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-1918 2014’. On this Two Pound’s obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of The Queen, the fourth official portrait. This coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, with a detailed booklet containing information about the design, and the history of WWI, from the role played by women on the home front, to the importance of recruits from across the British Empire. It also comes with its numbered certificate of authenticity. Weighing 12.00 grams in .925 sterling silver with fine gold plating around the rim, 5,483 were issued in this format.
