2014 five ounce silver proof coin from The Royal Mint, commemorating 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. This coin is part of a collection which marked the centenary with £5, £10, £100 and £1,000 coins, plus sets issued annually between 2014 and 2018. The obverse of this piece features the fourth definitive portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley. The reverse shows a design by veteran coinage artist John Berghdahl featuring Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain. Accompanied by a lion, another important national symbol, she stands proud on a clifftop, holding her trident aloft in the direction of battleships, representing the British Expeditionary Force. The BEF were the six British Army divisions that were initially sent to France following the Britains declaration of war on 4 August 1914. Berghdahl’s reverse has art deco leanings in the stylised figure of Britannia and her lion. The art movement was emerging in Europe in the years before the Great War. The design is struck on 156.30 grams of .999 fine silver to make this £10 / Ten Pound coin which measures 65.00 millimetres in diameter. The maximum mintage assigned to this issued by The Royal Mint is just 1,300 pieces though the number actually minted in 2014 seems to have been quite a bit less than that. This example comes in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a certificate of authenticity and an information booklet enclosed. A great gift for fans of British military history.
