2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Fifty Pence Silver Proof Coin

UK14CGS 2014 Commonwealth Games 50p Silver Proof Boxed
£40.00
The 2014 Commonwealth Games were mostly hosted by the city of Glasgow, but their impact was felt across Scotland, with cultural programming and special events being hosted across the nation. From athletics to lawn bowls, and from weightlifting to badminton, the games spanned 11 days and 17 sports. Traditionally, in the lead up to each Commonwealth Games, there is a baton relay departing from Buckingham Palace and extending across the Commonwealth - over 190,000 km and 70 Commonwealth nations. To celebrate the Glasgow Games, The Royal Mint released a series of commemorative coins, including this silver proof Fifty Pence. The Royal Mint have previously released collectable coins for the 1986 and 2002 Commonwealth Games, but 2014 marks the first 50p. Designers Alex Louden and Dan Flashman created the reverse design for this coin, leaning on ideas of patriotism with the Scottish flag, and choosing a runner and cyclist as they brought the most dynamism. The design is finished with the date and location of the games, and ‘XX’ to signify the twentieth games. On the other side, is Jody Clark’s portrait of The Queen, the fifth such effigy to be used on modern British coinage in circulation. One of 2,610, this 50p is struck in .925 sterling silver and finished to proof standard - a quality much higher and more detailed than circulating coins. It has a diameter of 27.30 milimetres and weighs the standard 8.00 grams.
