The Metropolitan line of the London Underground opened in 1863 to a crowd of 40,000 and became the world’s very first underground railway. It began with ventilation shafts to let out the smoke and fumes produced by steam powered locomotives, but in 1905 this line and District were converted to electricity. From the Hammersmith and City line which launched in 1864, to Jubilee line in 1979, each section of the Underground has a unique and fascinating history. There are now around 270 stations, and 250 miles of track stretching under (and sometimes over) ground through the capital. In 2013, to celebrate 150 years since the first part opened, The Royal Mint launched two commemorative coins. They are presented here together, in the original presentation box, with a lovely leaflet filled with stories from the Underground’s rich history. These two coins are displayed side by side, one features the front of a train, while the other features the iconic underground roundel. The former was designed by Edward barber and Jay Osbergy and has the front of a stylised Tube train. This train was used during the twentieth century as it optimised the amount of passengers while fitting into the Tube tunnels. Around the train are the lines of tunnel walls which indicate speed and the legend ‘1863 · LONDON UNDERGROUND · 2013’. The second coin of this pair uses a similar line texture, with the Underground roundel sign in front. This first appeared in 1908, with the official typeface conceived by Edward Johnson eight years later. Today it is instantly recognisable and inspired Edwina Ellis’ design. As well as the original packaging, these coins come with the certificate of authenticity. Weighing 12.00 grams each are struck from .925 sterling silver with a band of fine gold plating around the rim. Just 1,500 sets were issued in this presentation.
