Queen Elizabeth II is the first reigning monarch in 120 years to meet a great-grandchild destined to the throne. In 2013, following successful Diamond Jubilee celebrations the previous year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their first child, Prince George. Born on 22 July 2013, George’s birth was the first Royal birth to be marked on commemorative coinage. This silver proof Five Pound Crown features an impressive Saint George design by Benedetto Pistrucci. The patron saint of England, St George first appeared on English coins during the reign of Henry VIII. Pistrucci’s design was originally used in 1817 for the coinage of George III, but has since become a popular classic motif, which is also used in a remodelled format on the George Cross. In the artwork, which is depicted in silver for this commemorative coin, St George is pictured on horseback, with a flowing cape and sword. He is attacking a serpentine dragon, cowering under the horses hooves. A broken spear lies on the ground next to the dragon. The date 2013 has been added below. This classic design is paired, on the obverse, with Ian Rank-Broadley’s official effigy of Prince George’s great grandmother, Elizabeth II. Struck in .925 sterling silver, this pre-owned coin is one of 7,460 issued by The Royal Mint in this presentation. It comes in the original packaging with certificate of authenticity. This Five Pound Crown has a diameter of 38.61 milimetres and weighs 28.28 grams.
