From Britannia on the Fifty Pence to the portcullis on the Penny, the numismatic designs of Christopher Ironside are instantly recognisable. His work defined the new decimal coins of 1971 and have remained influential since. One hundred years after his birth, The Royal Mint sought to commemorate and celebrate his work with a special piedfort silver proof 50p. Shrouded in secrecy, Ironside won a competition in 1962 to design the new decimal coinage. While Arnold Machin won the obverse with his portrait of The Queen, Ironside was successful with the reverses. Originally, his Royal Arms design was deemed most attractive for the Fifty Pence, but the Britannia design was ultimately chosen instead due to public opinion. For this 2013 commemorative coin, Ironside’s Royal Arms design is finally given a platform. It graces the reverse of the 50p along with the denomination and date. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of The Queen, the fourth official effigy. This silver proof piece comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, including a small leaflet with information about Christopher Ironside, and the certificate of authenticity. This double thickness coin is comprised of .925 sterling silver; it weighs 16.00 grams and has a diameter of 27.30 milimetres. A total of just 816 were issued in this presentation.
