Born in Portsmouth in 1812, Charles Dickens worked in a factory and as a parliamentary reporter before he shot to fame in 1836 with the publication of The Pickwick Papers. This Piedfort silver proof Two Pound coin was released by The Royal Mint to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s most famous, and widely read, authors. Designer Matthew Dent recreated Dickens’ profile from a bust in London’s Charles Dickens Museum. The profile is made up of the titles of the writer’s most famous works, from the early Sketches by Box, to The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which was his final, unfinished novel. In recognition Dickens’ enduring popularity, Dent used typefaces for this illustration from a range of time periods, both those that would have been used during the nineteenth century, and later inventions. The coin’s legend reads ‘1812 CHARLES DICKENS 1870.’ Around the edge is an inscription taken from Charles Dickens’ personal favourite of his writings, David Copperfield. The quote is taken from the eternally optimistic Mr Micawber: ’SOMETHING WILL TURN UP.’ This £2 is made from .925 sterling silver, while the exterior band is plated in fine gold to give the two-toned effect common on circulated coins of this denomination. It weighs 24.00 grams and has a diameter of 28.40 millimetres. The coin comes in its original black presentation case and box, with a numbered certificate of authenticity. It is one of 1,279 in this format.
