In 2012 The Royal Mint offered a collection of commemorative coinage to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: a celebration of 60 years since her accession to the throne in 1952. These are the first coins struck to celebrate a British monarch’s Diamond Jubilee (Queen Victoria marked hers in 1897 but no special coins were issued). All the coins in the 2012 Diamond Jubilee collection feature a special obverse portrait by by celebrated sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. It shows a mature Elizabeth II, facing right, wearing the elaborate robes of the Order of the Garter. It’s an interesting variation on Rank-Broadley's definitive portrait of the Queen, in use on British coinage between 1998 and 2015. While the smaller denominations featured a design inspired by the first coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, this 65.00 millimetre, 5oz silver proof piece shows a remarkable seated portrait, also by Brank-Braodley. The image of Elizabeth enthroned was inspired by the Great Seals used by British monarchs and bears a similarity to the design of historic hammered gold Sovereigns. These two unique engravings are struck to proof standard on this 156.30 gram .999 fine silver coin. With a face value of £10 / Ten Pounds, its from a limited release of just 1,952 pieces. It comes enclosed in a blue leather presentation case with an information booklet enclosed that doubles as a certificate of authenticity. A fascinating memento of a remarkable reign.
