Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, celebrated his 90th birthday in 2011. To celebrate this milestone for Her Majesty the Queen’s husband, The Royal Mint offered a limited range of Five Pound coins. Pieces in this collection all featured a commemorative portrait of the longest lived consort of a British monarch. Its an unusual, close-up effigy, designed by sculptor Mark Richards. The reverse legend around the narrow rim reads: ‘PRINCE PHILIP · 90TH BIRTHDAY · FIVE POUNDS · 2011’. This is paired with the fourth official coinage portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. This Crown coin is struck in 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver and measures 38.61 millimetres across. It has a face value of Five Pounds and comes from a limited edition presentation of just 4,599. We’re offering this commemorative silver coin in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with its unique, numbered certificate of authenticity.
