This Piedfort Two Pound coin celebrates 500 years since the Mary Rose was launched in 1511. The ship was one of King Henry VIII’s favourites, and part of the push he made during the early sixteenth century to build a strong defence from French attacks, and win supremacy over the seas. This wooden warship served in several wars and was the first to carry cannons able to fire broadside from watertight gunports. Following refits in 1528 and 1536, she is thought to have become top heavy, and with an inexperienced crew, the ship capsized and sank in the Solent in July 1545. The wreck was discovered in 1971 and raised from the seabed a decade later, the salvaged hull now on display at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The insight the Mary Rose provides into Tudor life has captured the public imagination. This £2 coin features a detailed reverse designed by John Bergdahl showing the vessel in full sail, the words ‘THE MARY ROSE’ above in a Tudor-style font and the denomination below, separated by Tudor roses. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse. One of 2,680, this double thickness £2 weighs 24.00 grams and is struck in .925 sterling silver with gold plating around the rim. The inscription around the edge reads ‘YOUR NOBLEST SHIPPE 1511’. The coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
