In 2011 some 2,337 1oz silver Britannias were released with an unusual matte finish. This was supposedly caused by a production error. 800 of these coins achieved a grade of MS 70 MATTE when they were independent assessed by NGC and this is one of them. Both sides of the coin bear an attractive frosted finish, protected by the sealed Numismatic Guaranty Corporation holder. The obverse of these 2011 Britannias show Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, in used since 1998. The artists initials appear below the right facing portrait of Elizabeth II who sports the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This is paired with a one-year-only reverse by David Mach which shows the seated figure of Britannia - the female personification of the British Isles - set against a rippling Union Jack flag. It’s an interesting design that takes inspiration from historic images of Britiannia on UK coinage while encouraging the viewer to turn the coin to catch the fine detail of engraving. Like other Britannia bullion coins from this period, this example is composed of 31.21 grams of 95.8% silver (the fineness was increased from 2013 onwards). The diameter here is 38.61 millimetres. Between its unique reverse design and the important matte finish error this coin in the highest available grade is an important acquisition for Britannia collectors.
