At the Hampton Court Conference of 1604, King James I tried to settle the religious tensions between the Bishops and the Puritans. The Conference was also used as an opportunity to commission an updated translation of the Bible. This new Bible was published in 1611 and remains incredibly popular. As it quickly became the standard text in churches across the UK, the King James Bible had a profound influence on the English language, surpassing even that of Shakespeare. Its poetical richness introduced phrases and idioms that are still well used today. Four hundred years later, The Royal Mint issued a commemorative Two Pound coin in celebration of this influential text. The reverse was designed by Paul Stafford and Benjamin Wright and features the opening words of the Gospel: ‘IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD.’ On the left these words appear as printing blocks, while the right shows the printed page clearly in the original typeface of the first edition. The legend reads ‘KING JAMES BIBLE 1611-2011’. This celebration of print is paired on the obverse with Ian Rank Broadley’s fourth official effigy of The Queen. Around the edge is transcribed ‘THE AUTHORISED VERSION.’ Struck in .925 sterling silver with a band of fine gold plating, this coin comes in its original packaging from The Royal Mint including numbered certificate of authenticity. 4,494 were issued in this format, and they weigh the standard 12.00 grams with a diameter of 28.40 millimetres.
