From the Roman capital of Londinium with a population of 60,000 to one of the largest cities in Europe with a population of over 9,000,000, London has a long, rich, and fascinating history. With the oldest rapid transport system in the world, and four World Heritage Sites, London is both a bustling modern city and a historical undercurrent. The city is made up of 32 boroughs, each with its own Coat of Arms, so when this new series of One Pound coins was launched in 2010 to represent the capitals of each of the Home Nations, artist Stuart Devlin used the Coat of Arms of the City of London Corporation. For this silver proof One Pound, a circle in the centre depicts the cross of this shield with an upturned sword in the top left corner. The name 'LONDON' is inscribed above and the denomination 'ONE POUND' written either side. Three small circles representing Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff sit below. Around the edge is an inscription reading 'DOMINE DIRIGE NOS' or 'Lord direct us.' On the opposite side to Devlin's Coat of Arms design is Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. This is the fourth official effigy to appear on circulating UK coinage. This One Pound coin is struck in .925 sterling silver and weighs 9.50 grams, it has a diameter of 22.50 milimetres and is finished to high quality proof standard. One of 6,452 issued by The Royal Mint in this presentation, it comes with its original packaging and certificate of authenticity.
