Florence Nightingale is known for her contribution to nursing during the Crimean War, and is often called ‘The Lady with the Lamp’ as she tended the wounded at night. After studying nursing in Germany, she was asked on the outbreak of the Crimean War to oversee a team of nurses at a hospital in Turkey. Through tireless campaigning and working, she improved conditions and supplies in the Scutari hospital. Following this formative experience, she established her own training school for nurses at St Thomas’ Hospital in London and in 1860 published her ‘Notes on Nursing.’ Profoundly influential, she was one of the first women to be awarded the Order of Merit, and also received the Royal Red Cross. On the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s death, and 150 years since the publication of her text, The Royal Mint released a series of Two Pound coins, including this silver proof version, struck in .925 sterling silver with a band of fine gold plating. The reverse design features an outstretched hand, with another pair of hands taking their pulse. From the coin’s centre, rays of light are emitted symbolising Nightingale’s famous lamp. It was designed by Gordon Summers. There is an inscription around the edge reading ‘150 YEARS OF NURSING.’ Paired with these designs, is Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of The Queen, the fourth such effigy. This £2 coin comes in its original packaging, with a certificate of authenticity, and weighs the standard 12.00 grams. It is one of 3,876 in this presentation.
