The area in and around Belfast has been occupied since the Bronze Age, but it was in 1613 that Sir Arthur Chichester established it as a town. From the linen and shipping industries, to Nazi bombings and The Troubles, Belfast has a rich and complicated history. As part of a series celebrating each of the capital cities in the United Kingdom, The Royal Mint has focused on Belfast's nautical heritage in its 2010 design. This silver proof One Pound displays the Belfast Coat or Arms in a circle, with 'BELFAST' inscribed above and the denomination 'ONE POUND' written either side. Three small circles representing Edinburgh, London, and Cardiff sit below. Belfast's Coat of Arms is divided horizontally, with a ship at sea on the bottom half. The top half is divided by a large triangle, usually blue and white, with an interlocking pattern representing fur. A small canton in the top left corner features a bell, in reference to the city's name. However, the name 'Belfast' does not historically refer to a bell, but derives from the Gaelic 'Beal Feirste' which means 'mouth of the sandbars.' The reverse was designed by Stuart Devlin while the obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's popular portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, the fourth official effigy to feature on circulating coins. Around the edge is an inscription reading 'PRO TANTO QUID RETRIBUAMUS' which translates to 'what shall we give in return for so much.' This coin is struck to proof standard in .925 sterling silver and comes with its certificate of authenticity. It is one of 4,564 in this presentation, with a standard weight of 9.50 grams and diameter of 22.50 millimetres. This Belfast £1 has its original packaging from The Royal Mint.
